Gentlemen's Fountain Pen

Jim Shaver Oakville, Ont

>Hi,

I turned this one tonight and I have to say I was pretty excited. This blank comes from Bill in Arizona, a red dyed-stabilized box elder burl. I had a few moments of excitment and almost lost the top a few times to voids and cracks but thank God for thin CA glue. The finish is a micromesh sanding (wet) to 12,000 Nova Step 2 polish, then three applications of Mylands friction polish. I finished that off with a coat of Lee Valley's Conservators micro crystaline wax and buffed.

I hope my customer who ordered it is happy.

Take care,

Jim

>Hi Jim,

I don't think your customer will like that at all...you better send that to me and I can hide it for you.

Where do you get your pen supplies from? Do you order from the US or are they available in Canada.

You are doing a mighty fine job on those pens...keep up the good work and remember...I can hide the rejects here in Red Deer.

>Hi Tom,

Thanks for the kind and generous offer!

:-)

I buy kits at Lee Valley and Craft Supplies in the US, this kit came from Craft Supply. I recently have been buying my stabilized blanks from Bill at Arizona Silhouette, they are really wonderful to turn. There are a few Canadian sources for wood and blanks that distribute mostly Penn State product, but I like the products from Lee Valley, Craft Supply, Pens of Color and Arizona Silhouette the best.

take care,

Jim

Kit & plating?

>Jim,

Beautiful pen my friend! Absolutely gorgeous!

Now I can see why you like those kit so much. Is this the CSUSA kit? And what plating? Titanium, Rhodium?

See ya around,

Dominic

>Hi Dominic,

The kit is indeed the Craft Supply kit, it's the platinum kit. I also have the Staetsmen kit from CS, they use the same bushings and drills as the Gentlemens pen...It's a pricy kit deserving of a priemium turning.

Take care,

Jim

>Hi Jim,

That's really outstanding! The finish really gives the pen a great "depth" to it. It's often hard it seems to get burls and woods with a tight enough pattern that you get the full effect on something the size of a pen, but that piece of wood is really awesome and really conveys, I think, the beaufy of that piece of wood.

Very well done, thanks for the pics.

I appreciate the kind words and thoughts.

I delivered the pen yesterday, it did not slip so easily from my hand to his, he was very happy.

Take care,
