O.T. I Need Input On SBC DSL Service

Clem Wixted Jonesboro, AR

>I'm wanting to upgrade from my dial-up service which usually connects at 28,8 and have two options; SBC DSL service and COX Cable. SBC partners with Yahoo for this service.

The DSL has just recently been made available and is about $27 a month vs cable at $40.

Is SBC/Yahoo reliable and are there any details I need to know before committing? Are there any traps I need to watch for?

Thanks,

Clem

>Cox has just upgraded the speed for their service (downloads) to something around 5 megabits. Thats a lot more than you will get with DSL.

>I would go with cox. You would not believe the speed compared to the rest. IMHO, It's worth the few extra dollars a month. Best of luck, Sean

>I've had SBC DSL for several years now in the LA area and I would rate it as pretty good. The speed is generally over 300 kbps--it just now benchmarked at 344. Outages of a few minutes to an hour or so occur a couple of times a month, which I can live with although my teenage daughters complain bitterly.

I would have had to replace the decades-old cable run from my home to the street in order to use cable, so we kept DSL and scrapped cable for satellite TV service.

The cable company was singularly inept during the process of determining whether the existing cable was adequate for the required upgrade to digital service, and I was disappointed in the cost. Admittedly, cable does appear to be considerably faster than DSL according to people I know who have it.

>I have had good service, from my SBC DSL. The cable should be faster than DSL. But if you have suffered dial up this long, the DSL will be so much faster you will be in heaven and it may not be worth the extra cost to you for cables speed. >Something to consider: I believe the cable bandwith is shared with all users in the neighborhood. This is fine if you are one of the few users, not so fine if you are one of many downloading a big file. DSL is dedicated bandwidth for you. Mine has been reliable and consistent.
