Cherry burl bowl

>New for me. First time I tried to shape/carve something. Turned this as far as I could and shaped the rest to match the contour of the burl. Wanted to show how the burl wrapped around the branch. This was almost impossible to photograph so it showed the interior profile. It looked like I had simply cut it in half and sanded it flat, so I added some hotspots with aluminum foil. Carved/shaped with dremel and a rotozip with some foredom carbide bits. Tung oil finish, not buffed yet.

All comments welcomed. It looks neater in person and I think I will be doing more of this type work.

>Thanks. The bottom is very thick because the bark is extremely thick on this piece. As soon as I started to hit bark while turning it I stopped, so it is pretty thick. I think what I might do to the other half is to carve the interior and then carve away the exterior bark so the whole piece follows the interior profile. I can picture it in my head but who knows how it'll come out in real life!

To mount it I simply sawed off a flat section then a faceplate w/ short screws. I had planned on reattaching the piece, but damned if I didn't throw it out. So now I think I'm going to go over the bottom exposed section with metal leaf so it'll be a big surprise to turn it over.

>This one is VERY cool Mike. I love the way you were able to capture the look of the Burl as it encapsulated the branch of the tree. What a unique idea.........very innovative, as always. I can see where this was a challenge not only to turn/carve, but photograph. I think you did good capturing the essence of what you were trying to achieve. As always, Really nice work Mike. Great creativity in this piece!
