Fredericksburg Va.

MikeinCapeMay

>I'm headed there late winter/early spring, a 4 or 5 days tour of the local American Civil War battle sites; Fredericksburg itself, The Wilderness, Chancelorsville, Spotsylvania, Brandy Station, etc.

My wife and I will probably stay in Fredericksburg proper. Any recommendations from those in the know as to where? A good B&B or Inn?

Also and more importantly, any suggestions on places to check out for wood, tools, turning interest, etc.?

Thanks much!

>Mike,

Here's the name of a wonderful but expensive inn located in the heart of Old Town Fredericksburg - The Richard Johnston Inn Bed & Breakfast.

The main street through historic Old Town Fredericksburg is chock-full of antique shops sure to occupy your time. There are also many good places to eat in the area.

>Hello Mike,

My brother and his family live in Chancellorsville. He's not a woodworker, but can help with the other questions that you've raised. How about an email?

>That is a picture I took this Summer of a tree in old town Fredricksburg.

You likely already know all of this. John Hennesy lives and works in the Fredricksburg area. He is one of the countries leading experts on the Civil War. You should contact him before your trip.

Good Luck

>Mike, I can't help you much with what to do down there, but I sure hope you enjoy your trip, and that you gain a new understanding of who was right in this conflict. If you have any questions, I will ask Sarah to write you!

>Hi Dick,

I know, so does a friend of mine "up here" whom I jokingly refer to as a copperhead, as they were then.

>Princes Anne?

We were starting a two week vacation and I didn't feel like driving in interstate traffic. We did this little detour in Fredericksburg an came across that tree. I drove around the block so I could take that picture. What a strange looking tree. Sure would be a treat to make some bowls from that. As I look at the Yahoo Maps Princess Anne looks to be the right name for the road. I would guess the cross street to be Hawke or Fauquier.

Any idea what type of tree it is?

>Not sure what type of tree. To be honest I don't think I have ever looked up past about 10 feet high. There is so much going on at the bottom of that thing I never bothered to check what type of tree.
