Pen Display

Dominic Greco in Richboro, PA

>Hello Everyone,

I had to whip up a quick display stand for some pens I'm submitting to a near by gallery. I went into the shop with a plan in mind, then turned around and designed this baby on the fly!

At first, I was going to make a "lazy susan" style stand as shown in last month's "Woodturning Design". But I changed my mind after looking at the available wood I had. The pieces of Ambrosia Maple were just begging to be put to use for this project.

I also wanted to be able to have all of the pens shown off without the customer having to turn the stand. I liked the "boomerang" design I saw somewhere (I think Ed Davidson made one like it) and decided to pattern mine like it.

The entire stand is made from 1/2" thick Ambrosia Maple. The stand can hold (13) pens, and stands about 4" high x 11" wide.

The stand was sanded to 320 grit and was given several coats of Watco's Natural Danish Oil. After the finish cured, the stand was buffed with a Beall Buffing System.

I like the boomerang type of display too. Below is a pic of one I made last year, in cherry. (The pic was taken a couple weeks ago)

>That's an attention getter Nick, I think you have a much better stand this way than if you had gone with the lazy susan idea , good luck.

Have fun an take care

>These trays are from last year also. Same wood. Green felt back. There is a little brass card holder on the frame.

>This one did not work that well. The pens are held with clear elastic loops, which are almost invisible. Hard to pick up a pen from the tray, and even harder to put it back. I am glad I only made one of this type.

It seems like everywhere I go, people mistake me for my younger brother Nick. Except,...he has much more hair. :>)

Thanks for the compliments!

Yeah it does.

But to give credit where credit is due, I got the main idea from Ed Davidson's photo album on Penturner.org. It's the version with the laser engraving by "Studio N".

I really liked the "floating" top panel with "no visible means of support". So I incorporated that design feature into my version. In the stand I made, the vertical support is beveled at 10 deg to offset the top from the bottom and gives the pens a better display angle.
