Questions about pepper mills and bottle stoppers

Ron in Drums PA

>If I may, I have a few questions about pepper mills and bottle stoppers.

1) Does anyone have some tips they would like to share on turning and assembling pepper mils.

2) Which size would you recommend for pepper mills. I'm thinking 7" or 8".

3) I noticed some nice plated bottle stoppers and some basic silicone and cork stoppers. Which do you like best for presents?

4) I scored a bunch of 2" square dried Bubinga in random lengths. Do you think there will be any problem with the peppercorns being in contact with this wood?

5) And of course, who is a good source?.

Thanks All!

>Ron,

I too have just started working on making pepper and salt mills. I selected the 8" size to start with. I thought this size was suitable for table use without being overpowering.

I suggest a search of recent messages as there has been some pepper mill discussions recently. Also, search the archives. I offer the following for as sources: Recent issue of "American Association of Woodturners", article by Nick Cook, excellent and was my giude for my first mill attempt (will post pic soon); www.newwoodworker.com has an article in the Tips & Tricks by Tom Hintz, "Turning A Peppermill" and "Installing A Peppermill Mechanism"; finally, at www.lehighvalleywoodturners.com/page90.html is a nice picture/text demonstration done by Ted Sokolowski (the demo).

There is certainly more than one way to do the peppermill turning. I followed the Nick Cook article for my first go at it. Later, I might try to incorporate some of the techniques mentioned by other folks.

Good luck. It is a real fun project.
