"Spike"

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Named after my favorite vampire, and for the spikey hairdo.

Maple burl, about 8" x 6", done on commission. Sanded to 1500, by hand because it wouldn't hold a vacuum. One coat of tung oil, one of sanding sealer then 2 coats of brushed Mylands cellulose lacquer, steel wooled in between 1 and 2. Then sanded to 600 and buffed with tripoli and white diamond. Incredible, deep gloss from just the 2 coats of mylands. First time I put it on thick like that.

Comments welcomed, thanks for looking.

>Very nice! I don't know what Mylands does but it's good. There is a melding of finish and wood and it only enhances the grain. You could have skiped sanding at 600 as the 0000steel wool is like 600.

>Looks awesome Mike! Are you letting the Mylands dry completely? Or are you wiping it off?

Instead of having to sand by hand you might consider making a fixture for reverse mounting back on the lathe.

I have a bunch of sizes of fixtures to fit my jaw chucks. In this case it would be long and narrow to go in to the mouth of the bowl. I reverse the bowl on to the fixture prior to bottom finish. As I start between centers I can bring up the tailstock to its original position and restart the lathe for bottom removal and sanding. When finished all you do is remove the tit left after bottom removal and sand that off.

Good turning and be safe
