>Kind of hard to tell. I looked at it. There are not accessories available to fit, excepting from Jet itself maybe. The pen mandrels use a #0 Morse taper that is hard to obtain.
Grizzly and PennState offer a lathe for about $139 that uses #1 Morse taper, and a more common 3/4"-16 spindle thread. It is much heavier, about 45 lbs, but MUCH sturdier than the tiny Jet.
Most of us love our Jet Minis, which is two steps up from the Jet Pen Lathe.

The Jet pen lathe is to light, underpowered and has a #0 MT which keeps you from any third party pen mandrils. (it is only 1/12 hp).
Good Luck

>I had one for a week and took it back.
On board wrenches were stamped steel and wore out quickly.
It had only 2 speeds.
Ditto on the 0 Morse taper,it will work for slimlines but if the recipient stays with it and wants different styles, like the "B" mandrel series from Berea they will have to get a larger lathe any way.
It will only do pens,I doubt you could turn more than a thimble for a bowl.
I have heard good reports about the Grizzlys,I have the Jet mini and for a first lathe I am quite happy with it.
Mine does not have the electronic speed control and dealing with the belt for speed changes is no big deal.
One more point about the Jet Pen maker lathe.
The mandrel that comes with it was a bad fit with some of the kits I tried,If you have to go out and get a new mandrel and shaft you have increase the base cost.

Either a Jet 1014 variable speed or just the 1014 are good lathes for small work including pens. If you want to afford it the varriable is the best. These lathes will hold value for resale if she decides to sell. Most times if you start to turn you are hooked for life.
I have a very large lathe 2436, a 12" and a Jet 1014 variable. I love them all.
I put my jet on a mechanics base cabinet with drawers and it works great. I keep all my small stuff in the cabinet and when I want to turn pens etc. it is all there.
Good turning and be safe

Observation from devoted Jet owner...

>...in a word, the Jet pen lathe is a piece of crap. This comes from a person who owns and loves 2 Jet lathes...the 1442 and the 1014. The 1014, in my opinion, is the smallest lathe Jet makes that is of any quality whatsoever. I cannot believe Jet makes/markets the pen lathe...seems to me it would garuntee that no one ever bought another Jet product if it were the first acquaintanance they had with Jet equipment.
