Another small turning

Don Henthorn Smithville, Texas

>A small maple cup turned about 1/8" thick, 3" in diameter and 3 1/4" tall. Finished with shellac. The curve seems to have a flat spot about half way down the bowl on the left hand side but not on the right???? It doesn't appear in the other picture not do I see it in real life. Can't explain that. Notice the nasty split in the base which didn't show up until after I had thinned the base some.

As far as the small splits and cracks you seem to be having, your answer might be in the sanding process. Are you sanding so that the paper and the wood get hot? I think I'm seeing some tiny crazing which indicates sanding too fast, which causes heat, which causes cracks. If this is the case, try slowing down both the lathe and the sanding speeds. I believe you will find that the sanding actually gets done quicker, the paper lasts longer, and the crazing/cracking lessens.
