Antler Pen Question

Jerry Whitaker

>I have turned several antler pens with the only problem being that the antler will smell if you turn too fast or with dull tools causing friction which translates into heat and then smell which soon disapates. However, I have a friend that turned one several days ago and it still stinks after being totally finished. Could the antler be too fresh, something the deer had for breakfast the morning the deer was killed or what? There is no way anyone will buy this pen with such a smell and in fact, he is embarrassed to even try to sell it. I would be too. Any ideas as to why this is or what to do about it???

I don't know what caused it, but

I don't like to work with antler, especially fresh ones. I am alergic to stinkus tremendus.

Organic materials are very unpredictable.

I finish all my antler pens with CA and I doubt anything would escape through that finish to smell... LOL
