Chainsaw safety

William

>Hey all,

I have arrived at the point where I want to get a chainsaw for my turning needs. It will relieve a lot of the burden that I force onto my bandsaw! Long overdue for me.

Is there a guide or tutoral on how to properly cut a log? I've read up on the safety equipment needed, but I only found generic info on technique.

My needs will be basically to split a log in half, on either side of the pith. Or just cutting down to size. Any special jigs required for this?

Any pointing in the right direction would be great! Thanks in advance

William

>Welcome to the world of Chainsaws! First, read the manual. It should have some very good safety tips! If it doesn't, then look at other makes and models manuals on line. The most popular brands give good advice in their manuals.

Second, check out Bill Grumbine's website @ http://www.enter.net/~ultradad/logcutting.html for good tips on what happens after the tree is down and bucked (crosscut) into manageable sections. Third, you'll find Bill's video which from what I've seen and heard is a new and highly informative way of learning the basics of bowl creation. http://www.wonderfulwood.com/dvd.html

>Husky has a free vedio for chainsaw safety. The video is primarly concerned with felling the tree and avoiding the dangers of the tree kicking back as it starts it's fall. But there are other discussion on the tape as well.

There is nothing on the tape about preping wood for woodturning.
