>Turned from kd 8/4 curly maple stock. 6.5"diameter by 2.75" tall. Dyed, 10 coat lacquer finish, leveled and rubbed out up thru rottenstone. Collar is dyed maple. I need to figure out how to photograph high gloss.

>Very nice piece. I'm currently turning a couple pieces of curly maple, I sure hope mine look 1/2 as nice! As to photographing...not sure how well this will work for close up pictures of a turned item, but I remember a photographer friend of mine saying that he dusts high gloss furniture with graphite to help cut some of the reflectiveness. Granted that was on large pieces like dressers, beds... so he wasn't getting close enough that he could see the graphite.... might be worth a try still.

>nice finish, nice piece. however i would like to offer my knee-jerk reaction for your next piece: the collar is too big on this one and distracts from the beauty of the form...

Thanks all

>Thanks all for the responses. I agree, the collar is to big. I'll try to improve upon it on the next piece or just give up on collared work. Nah, I'm to stubborn for that.

>Wow! That's beautiful. I'm a fairly new woodturned and I came here looking for how to get a nice glossy finish on my handspindles (http://www.jumaka.com/spindles/index.html). Please tell me more how you did it.

As for the photography, maybe I can help. We were taught in photo school to completely surround shiny obects with white. Make a tent out of white cardboard, sheets, anything you can find. Stick the camera in a hole to take the picture. Then the bowl will be reflect white everywhere and look more uniform. Hope this helps.
