>I just bought the tool yesterday, tried it out and I'm very frustrated. If I set the gap very small (1/16-1/32) to take a fine cut it immediately clogs. This is in kiln dried padauk and bubinga. It seems to clog in air dried black walnut even with the gap set to 1/4 and this setting is way too agressive for me. I tried sharpening it with a diamond hone in case it came dull out of the factory, but no luck. Am I doing something wrong or should I just take it back?
I'm not familiar with the tool -- is this like the Exocet or the Hamlet Big/Little Brother hollowing tools ? The Exocet has a chip breaker/depth set, and does sometimes get clogged, but the 'new' wood should push the 'old' wood through...
Two other thoughts: I usually use my hollowing tools with green wood, which may just be easier to deal with; and the dry Bubinga I've turned has had a pretty wild figure, and lots of twisted grain -- and very tough. Could this be the problem ?
If the tool you're using is at all like the Exocet, Hamlet, or the Pro Forme, you can also create a gentler cut by rotating the tool to get a more shearing cut, and that sometimes helps with the hollowing tools I've used.
