rosewood or mahogany??

bob strand

>I was given a chunk of old wood that I've turned an 10"x6" natural top out of but I don't know what it is. Its definitely red, very soft and not a lot of grain definition. I'm guessing its rosewood or mahogany. I've not worked with any mahogany and the only rosewood I know of it on the sides and back of my guitar. I don't really need to know, just curious.

Thanks,

Bob

>If it's very soft it's not rosewood. Nor have I seen a rosewood without grain. My guess would have to be luan or phillipean "mahogany". Real mahogany (in my experience) isn't very soft.

I never turn woods I'm unsure of, way too many possible complications for me.

>Thanks for the input. It did cause some itch, scratch and sneeze, even through the respirator, but very soft and lack of definition makes me think luan or Phillipine mahogany. Have to go chase geese tomorrow so won't get a finish on it for a couple of days.
