Friday woodturning chuckle

Mike Schwing from Md.

>The piece pictured below sits in my office, where I pretty much have a gallery of work. It is certainly one of my best hollow forms.

I receive all sorts of visitors to my "gallery", from those who are told by others to stop by to people just walking in the aisle and a piece catches their eye.

This morning one of my coworkers brought someone from another office by. She was looking all around, saw the piece pictured, and said "Ooh! That is pretty, I know what this is. Its one of those candle things you fill with oil and light the wick!" I replied, "yeah, I suppose you could use it for that".

All in the eye of the beholder...

>Should have had your Devils Bowling ball piece there and said, yeah this is what happened the last time I tried that.

Very nice looking vessel.

That's funny. I did a show once where a lady came up and looked at my Christmas ornaments and said " are those fish bobbers". I knew I was at the wrong show.

>I usualy bring in my latest piece for a day or two. No permanent colection. My wife is always concerned with how much space my "stuff" take up at home. Maybe the office would make for a nice "annex" to the home "gallery".

The nice folks at work are used to seeing my turnings. I brought in the one pictured and was asked by the boss how much longer it would take to complete the turning.

I told him I had given up on the bowl as it was proving to be to difficult to complete.

People also think thy are fan pulls and plumb bobs. And, yes, they are hanging on a Christmas tree. I usually tell them they are ment as Chistmas ornmanets. However, I guess you could use them as a fan pull or plumb bob.

Where burls REALLY come from.

Bob Hackett

>I was in the process of explaining to a person who had just bought one of my pieces that nobody really knows what causes burls when a woman who was looking at my other work informed me she knew exactly what caused them.

"Bees sting the trees and that`s what causes them" she stated very seriously. When I asked her where she got her information she told me her husband was a licensed arborist and he should know.

I then pulled a large(nearly 3 foot diameter)burl slab from the back of the booth and asked her "How big do you figure the bee was that caused this and would you care to guess what he was so darn angry about?"She stormed off and I may have lost a sale.

Later the fellow I was originally talking to brought back a friend after telling him the story and he bought something so I guess it evened out.

So now the secret`s out and soon everyone will know how burls are really formed.

I was kidding with some people and told them that I coated the outside of my Christmas ornaments with a special chemical and then put termites inside. They would eat away all the wood until they reached the outer portion that was soaked with the chemical. That's how I got them hollow.

Later I was eating lunch away from the booth and heard her telling someone else about how I got the ornamaments hollow.

>There's people out there we really don't need to joke around with. This apparently was one of those persons................

I was bragging a bit at work the other day to one of the women in the office about having a new Stubby 750 on order. "Oh great", she replied, "You can make us a new picnic table for outside." I told her I would get right on it, just as soon as I took delivery. I just know I'm gonna live to regret that wisecrack!
