Tool Making question?? *LINK*

Ezekiel Holliday

>I'm wanting to make a couple of bent angle tools like Robert Rosand sells. I've already have the 3/16" tool bits and 1/4" square steel.

e and braze th

Here's my question. Should I just cut the end of the 1/4" steel off and the angle tip on? Or, should I have the end milled so that the extra 1/16" of the 1/4" bar is under the cutter?

Just cut it.

>That 1/16" inch of steel won`t add much support and if you braze the bit on correctly it`ll be plenty strong enough. You`ll bent the shank before you tear that bit off.

I filed mine down so there was a shelf for the HSS to sit on because I was using Silver solder and wasn't sure of the strength of the bond. I felt like this would give me at least twice the bond area.

Not long. I roughed it out with a hacksaw and then filed it flat. I never did get it perfectly flat but it's held through 50 ornaments so far.

>Hi John,

The W-1 arrived today from mcMasters. They're certainly quick, I ordered it on Tuesday. Anyway I have various sizes now to make scrapers, parting tools and chatter tools. In addition to bowls, I do a lot of stoppers and other small work and need some small tools. I'll let you know how this goes. I also picked up the 3 piece "cheapie" HSS set from Harbor Freight as suggested in the thread that I had initiated. I figure I can machine those into the shapes that I want. Thanks for your reply.

Soldering vs brazing

Bob Hackett

>Silver solder is a different animal than silver braze and the bond strength is lower when using it.

I think you`ll find that if you try silver braze you won`t go back to the solder. It`s not that much more difficult to do and the results are woth the extra heat and effort. You can use it to make your own bandsaw blades too.

1,000,000 machinists can`t be wrong(well, they could I suppose but I wouldn`t want to be the one to point it out to them),they all braze thier carbide cutters or at least they did till inserts came along.

>A silver braze joint properly done is about 90,000 psi tensile strength. So a .25" x .25" contact area has about a 5000 pound breaking strength.

Mapp Gas....

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Don,

If I'm not mistaken....you'll need Mapp Gas. Yellow tank. Al Crandall walked me thrrough the steps and this is what we used.

Jen`s correct

>At least around here MAPP comes in a yellow cylinder, propane is either blue or green.

You can use the same torch you`re using now just change to the MAPP gas cylinder.

I find the MAPP gas to be a big help when bending larger steel for tools and for quicker and more controlled heat treatment and tempering too.I also works better for scorching rims and such as the heat doesn`t travel as deeply into the wood or too far outside the intended area.

About the only thing I use propane for anymore is soldering or any job where less heat is needed, flame heating plastics comes to mind.

>Nope. MAPP gas is what you want. And you'll want a torch head that is rated for MAPP and not just propane. Some are just for propane and some are for MAPP and propane.

I use the small MAPP gas tanks in the woodturning shop and then get the large large tanks from my godfather who owns a machinist company for my woodworking shop use in making tools. For the big jobs, I just take it to his company ... but he still charges me! The small tanks last fairly long when you're just doing brazing or doing a few tools.
