Christmas ornaments

>I haven't posted any photos here in ages. Here's a couple of photos of some of the Christmas ornaments I've turned for this season. The hollowed globes are Big Leaf Maple and the icicles and caps are Cherry. Transtints alcohol dyes are used for coloring. The finish is lacquer.

>Hi Tony,

Those are mighty nice looking ornaments. That is about a years worth of turning for me.

In 20 years I could trim a small tree in Longview, WA.

>Thanks John. BTW those hollowing tools work real well on these. I need to get geared up also. These are selling faster than I have been making them.

>Tony,

Good looking ornaments! Did you ever do anything with the big chunk of Osage Orange I dropped off the day I came to look at the Nova 3000?

>Hey Jay. Looks like you got moved. Did you get a PM 3520a? I still have the Osage Orange sitting here. I've been getting the itch to throw it on the lathe. Maybe next weekend. Seems after buying the PM all I turn is smaller items. They sell better. BTW did you turn the spalted oak piece? Still have the Nova 3k, kinda figured I'd keep it for my second lathe.

>Not really much to explain. I sand to 0000 steel wool. I use Transtints alcohol soluble dyes and pad on several coats to get the color depth I want. The black takes many applications to get it that dark. I allow a day for the dye to dry and apply a light 1st coat of lacquer to seal in the dye. A heavy coat will cause the dye to run. After that is dry I apply 3 or 4 more coats of lacquer and let that dry for a couple of days. I then rub that out with steel wool and buff. I go for more of a gloss on the globes and satin on the icicles. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

No and Yes

>Tony,

Nope, I haven't upgraded beyond the 1236. I guess I just make excuses so I don't have to spend the $$$. I'm sure I wouldn't reqret it, but the initial outlay would break my heart. As for the Oak, it is now a 11 7/8 in rough out sitting in one of the many boxes full of wood to be unpacked within the next 2 or so weeks. The good news is that most every other room is complete, just Shopage (Shop/Garage) to do. But that itself will be a chore, lot's of shelves to put up, boxes of wood and supplies to unpack, and machines to tune. But hey! I gotta get it done now, because when our new daughter arrives (due 10 Dec) I'll have little enough time to use it much less unpack it!

~Cheers!
