Tool steel question

MikeinCapeMay

>Can anyone tell me if water-hardening grade W-1 tool steel would be appropriate material to use in making scrapers and parting tools?

Thanks!

>You may get different opinions but that is what I've been using for most of my handmade tools unless I use a chunk of HSS as the cutter. I prefer the W-1 because it's just less messy than using oil hardening steel.

Lately most of my tools have been made using cold rolled lower carbon steel and adding HSS inserts by either silver soldering them in place or using set screws to hold them. John

>Thanks John. I've ordered some stock of various dimensions to make small scrapers and parting tools. I'm also going to try my hand at chatter tools. The source that I'm buying from, which seems to have very reasonable prices, at least for W-1, is at the link below.

save money.........

>Mike, save yourself some bucks and buy the HSS turning set from HF. Grind the scrapers to any shape you like. They cost about $5 each and the steel is actually very good.

These *LINK*

>Link below. I bought them as a starter set, with the intention of buying better tools later. I still use them. Current price is $34.99.

With the price of steel climbing, I might buy another set and save them.

Re: One more . . .

>At that price I had to get a set.

Also, they have 50 yd X 1" rolls of various abrasives for $3.99 each.....pretty good deal, especially if you make stoppers and other small items.

Thanks,

Mike

>Eduardo,

Do you weld the bit to the shaft?

How do you cut the planer blade to make the bits?

Could you post a few pictures?

Thanks,

Clem
