>FWIW - I check my suppliers for a price on a 5 gal pail of alcohol. (old time printers use alcohol).

$48 for 5 gallons. No big savings. The upside is that there is less water in this alcohol to begin with, 99% anhydrous - The DNA you buy at Lowes is somewhere around 85% anhydrous.

For those that are "REALLY" serious about this, I have a source for 55 gal drums for $290. By the time you pay for shipping on this will come to about $8 a gallon.

Bottom Line: 1 gallon for $10 at Lowes/Home Depot is a good deal. I picked up 3 today.

Kinda what I thought.

>Hi Ron,

Thanks for the information. I had several people ask me about buying large quantities and I never looked into it. It was my understanding that denatured alcohol was 95% because the last 5% of water is very difficult to remove and requires special techniques. That is why pure grain alcohol is 190 proof or 95% alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is normally sold in a 70% solution because the antibacterial properties peak at that level. I believe printers use isopropyl because it evaporates slower. Someone stated in one of the responses to my earlier post that isopropyl will work in the bowl drying process as effectively as ethanol. I tried it but I don't like my shop smelling like a hospital emergency room. It gives me the willies.

Someone will be asking for a study on taste differences from alcohol and various woods. I suggest starting with oak per my main man Jack.
