Large silver maple salad bowl

>17" in diameter, silver maple salad bowl with every kind of figure you can muster, including quilting, tiger stripe, ambrosia tracks, spalting, and some burl eyes! (yup, it came from the log dump). Finished by sanding to 1000 grit and then 3 coats of Watco Natural, then buffed.

This one is probably technically my best work to date, one of the few I'd be comfortably having critique this one in person (can't say that about all of my stuff).

I think this piece might be my keeper for the year.

Thanks for looking and comments welcomed.

>Hi Mike,

I really enjoy how the curve on this bowl just flows around the piece. I think this is something which we all strive for in our turning. Wood from log dumps or the side of the road is most interesting.

>Mike,

From the log dump!? Talk about making a silk purse from a sow's ear. It looks gorgeous!

Nice profile and finish as well.

Did you use Dave Smith's alcohol soak technique on this one?

See ya around,

Dominic

>Beauty, Mike. Just shows to go ya -- a beautiful, simple, bowl isn't so simple. I think its telling that with all the beautiful pieces you've posted here, some very demanding technically, your favorite is this one, with a simpler profile. I think there is something truly elegant and honorable about a humble bowl raised to the level of art by the skill of a master craftsman.
