homemade chatter tool

>While attending the Totally turning symposium in Albany NY I had the pleasure to watch and talk with Richard Montague who was demonstrating chatter work. He was using a chatter tool which he made himself, fashioned from a Hyde leather cutting knife. I took note of the name Hyde but failed to record where he purchases these knives. I've checked Tandy and did a Google search, all to no avail. Any help?

Thanks!

Mike

ps: The symposium was great.

>Nice link, Andrew.

You can make chatter tools out of all sorts of metal from hacksaw blades, metal strapping, spring steel, or any thin, tough, springy metal.

Generally, softer, more flexible metal for softer woods.

In addition to the store-bought Stewart tool, I have a number of other chatter tool blades from various scraps -- just hold in vice grips, and experiment with the length of blade sticking out, speed, etc...

Safe spinning,

>Mike...are you sure about the spelling? Maybe he is meaning "hide" instead of "Hyde" and that any brand will work. He may not be talking about a certain brand name but referring to it using a generic term.
