Tell me it ain't so.......

>I just learned that Black and Decker who has just bought Delta is discontinuing the 8" 1800 rpm grinder (a good grinder) and will only sell the new variable speed 8" grinder (junk). Surely this company will rethink this. You would think B-D would have learned by now to leave things that work alone.

>It's called progress. One step foward and two steps back. Think will stay with my Grand Dad's old Packard grinder. It's been doing the job for over 50 years and it still working great.

>I have one of those grinders. It is one heavy SOB. I'm just not sure the quality is on par with the weight. Mine works okay, but I've heard a number of complaints from others. So, the loss may not be so great. I think the Woodcraft slo-speed grinder at $99 is a much better deal.........and maybe a better grinder.

>Terry, I,m sure your remember when the name Delta really meant something special. Like most woodworkers of my generation, I anticipated the day I could own a Delta Unisaw or 12" gap-bed lathe.

It saddens me to see what has been done to this once-majestic product line. I can only hope someone at Bn'D can restore what's left; I won't hold my breath.

>as I think it is one of the best, if not the best, mid priced 8 inch grinder out there. Yes, the Baldor is somewhat better (I know, I had one), but at well over twice the price, and not without it's own drawbacks.

Yes, it seems that the big Delta had some original teething pains, but I now have two of the more recent models, and haven't had a hint of trouble from either.

Their weight is almost unmatched and does make a difference in stability and vibration control (yes, even with balancers) and the motor were powerful enough to bring the wheels to speed very quickly and keep them there.

I hope they reconsider.

>So often when these types of announcements are made there will be a flurry of messages on the newsgroups and sites like this. I'm not certain how much good it does but the company should be made aware of the general feelings.

Personally, I've got the Woodcraft $95 grinder on my Christmas wish list and think I might have a good shot. When I gave my wife the list she asked me if I had ordered the stuff yet.

>Hate to say but this is probably just first of many great tools on the chopping block. Black and Decker is a corporation to make money, not tools. They have no interest in niche markets for quality tools. For them it is all about mass market. I can see in the not too distant future where Grizzly brand is the premium quality tool line.

That's truely sad if it ever comes to be. Hopefully, expect to see some surprises in product lines coming from Grizzly (turning related) in the future. It all depends on outside forces on what will happen. I'm in no way officially connected with the Grizzly company.
