>I did a box turning demo for my local club a few weeks ago so I built several boxes of different styles to show the techniques and possibilities. I thought you might enjoy these.

The black box was an old piece of fir. I painted it black and used metalic markers to color it. The next box is Big Leaf maple burl with a mahagony top. Top was colored with red analine dye and then rubbed with brown shoe polish.

The third one is spalted maple and the last one is Cocobolo with a Poplar top that was air brushed and then dotted with puff paint.

Wow!

>Hi John,

I'm not usually a really big fan of the pieces that see extensive color modifications drawn pictures after they are turned, but I really love that first box! That is really awesome. The colors and shape all just seem to work in a "space" sort of way.

Thanks for the pic, that's really neat!

Mike

Gonna have to rethink this paint stuff in Apex, NC!!!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm not a huge paint fan but I'm trying to learn how to handle the stuff. I don't want to be held back when designing a piece. I friend gave me that piece of wood and it was really ugly. I've had it for years and finally decided to play with it. It had to have paint.

>Thanks for posting John,

They look great. I like the range of shape, which was your intent.

Add me to the list of not liking painted wood but willing to try.

I don't get all the exotic wood that some of you guys turn. Mostly it's just run of the mill wood that's often very plain. When it's just too plain I paint it or burn it or whatever it takes. It lets me experiment. The birdhouses I did were done for just that reason. I wanted to find something that could be made from really common wood. 2x4's are about as commonn as you can get. Painting on those made all the difference and allowed me to learm more about paint.

>John, like Mike I am not a huge fan of paint on wood, but you really did a great job on these! The first one with the black paint is my favorite. That must have taken some time to get everything the way you wanted, eh?
