Square bowl *LINK*

Don Henthorn Smithville, Texas

>I wanted to try a square bowl just for the fun of it and I had this bland little block of

California Laurel that wouldnt be a great loss if I goofed. The turning went well except

that the wood was a little punky in places, so I wet sanded it with 50-50 polly and mineral

spirits and 320 grit. That helped smooth the punkiness out although some of the pin holes

are darker than the surrounding wood. I used a walnut glue block on the faceplate and at

the end left a thin ring on the foot tp provide some contrast. Imagine my surprise when I

hit it with the poly during sanding and this great figure popped out. Of course the walnut ring no longer stood out.

>Nice bowl Don! I have been doing some stuff like this lately too, only with burls. I just had to squeeze half a bottle of super glue into a cherry burl for the same reason you mention. That is the first time I have done that, and it may be the last. That stuff runs all over the place!

So did you use the poly mix as a filler, stiffener, or both?

>The wood was stiff enough, I just used it as a filler. I have done that several times recently and not just with punky wood. To me it seems that filling the pores with the slurry speeds up the sanding. But what do I know?(-:
