>Im looking to get a 4 jaw chuck for my jet mini lathe. I havebeen considering a talon foom one way. i here their products are well made. Butt the price has me holding off. How ever I have found a "utility 4 jaw chuck" in Packard ($54.95) and in Penn State Industries ($46.95) has anyone had any experience with these. good bad.... or should I just go ahead and shell out the money for the tallon. any and all coments welcome.

>I have the cheapy Penn State chuck and have used it almost daily for about 7 months. I've had no problems with it. I know it's not the quality of the better chucks but it holds the wood well and seems to run true. Someday I'll buy one of Nova's or similar but for now, I've certainly got my $45. worth.

>Hi Guys,

I must echo Bubba and Mike's thoughts. I have two Vickmark 100's and use them every day. They perform flawlessly. I also have a Stronghold but generally use the Vickmarks.

>I have a supernova chuck and one of the cheapo chucks you mentioned. Surprisingly, I like the cheapo check better. This chuck is predrilled for 1"x 8tpi. So When I move up to a bigger lathe I can't take it with me.

Re: Have you considered an adapter?

Al Crandall

>Even though you might eventually be turning on a larger lathe, you don't need the larger spindle threads for pieces the size of which you are presently turning. All of your present tooling will carry over to the bigger lathe by using a spindle adapter, and will be just fine for all the work the size of which you are now doing. I suggest buying a limited amount of new tooling when you move up to a larger lathe to handle the work which falls into the gap between the two lathe sizes. In my shop anything below 14" or 16" gets turned on the 1"-8 adapter and above that gets the 1 1/4"-8 tooling. Nothing got "wasted" when I bought the larger lathe. I bought only the largest jaws for the new larger chuck, because if the piece would fit into the smaller jaws of the large chuck, it would also fit into the smaller jaws of the smaller chucks which I already had.

Look at PSI mini grip 3

Brad in Cocoa

>I too have a Jet mini and I looked at the same chuck. But saw the mini grip 3 package from Penn State Industries. It is $79.99 for the chuck with 3 sets of jaws. If you buy on line it is only $69.99. I ordered it last week and it should arrive any day now. I am not a pro and it should meet my very amatuer needs.

>Thanks Al for your response

The truth is the chuck cost $45. The adaptor cost $39.

I'm hoping the same chuck is available with 1-1/4"x8tpi threads. If I sell my old lathe I'll give the chuck with the lathe, if not I'll have a chuck dedicated for the old lathe.
