Bleaching Wood....

>I did a little bleaching several years ago. I still have one piece that was bleached, with no other finish. I don't like the way it looks now, years later.

I plan to do some more bleaching, and am wondering if anyone has had experience with putting some kind of finish over bleach that won't yellow the bleach.

>I use the two part bleaching process, and generally SEVERAL coats. After that, I usually sand with a 800 grit (not a wet or dry!)and either shoot it with a clear Krylon matte and then a VERY fine sandpaper or use a 4000 grit Abralon and renaissance wax. Comes out very smooth.

For many years I have used "Varathane Diamond" Floor Finish, product number 230131. It is water based, clear semi-gloss.

I have used it on furniture, turnings, and on floors. I just refinished our bedroom floor, applied it and was not very HAPPY, then I realized I had skipped a step. I had not BLEACHED the floor.

I ended up using "Klean-Strip" wood bleach part A & B.

I stripped the original Verathane Diamond off, bleached the floor and then applied the Varathane Diamond again, and WOW!!!! THAT is what I wanted, white - no-color except where the bleach had not removed the darkest grains. THE FLOOR IS WHITE, not YELLOW-GOLD-ORANGE ADE, ETC, ETC.

Now, if you have the time, there is the entry-stairs, hall, living room................

"Varathane Diamond" goes on like milk and dries CLEAR, and YES, I will continue to use it after bleaching when I want "NO" color. It is my opinion that the wood has to be treated in some way to kill the tannins (color), for best results.

Good luck and enjoy.
