Inspire a 12 yr old

Bud Gabaree

>I have a 12 year old boy who is too into video games and TV. I know that if I fired his imagination in the shop, he'd be bitten. I'm looking for posts/pics/dimensions for things like tops (I remember seeing one with a pull string that'd be cool)and yoyos. Can you folks help?

Thanks, Bud

>bud, I know winter is close. But is he interested in sports? If so, see if he wants to turn his own baseball bat.

Also, My 14yr old nephew got a kick out of turning his own pen. If you want to borrow some of my pen turning supplies, kits, and mandrels you are more than welcome to give that a try with him.

>Bud,

I encourage you to find a woodturning club in your area and go to a meeting/demonstration and by all means take the 12 year old along. My 15 year old son and I joined a woodturning club in our area of Va., and there's a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from in a club of this type. The next youngest person in the club is around 30, but that doesnt stop my son. He gets right in there with the "older" members of the club with the show and tell, discusions and demo's etc. Again, find a club and do it, you won't regret it.

>Hi Bud,

My soon to be(I can't believe it) 12 year old son, like yours is very into video games and TV. He also has shown interest in the turning. He is without a doubt my biggest fan when it comes to my turnings and what I take off the lathe, and to see how much it means to him for me to let him enjoy the process of making something on the lathe too is a real neat trade.

He's really pretty good at making pens. I do most of the prep work with the pen blanks and assembly but he takes care of everything else in regards to the turning, sanding and finishing. He's also made candle sticks, tops, back scratchers and miniature bowls and a tiny goblet. When he finishes a project start to finish he is SO proud of it and I am too! He loves being out there with me working away into the evenings. There's a lot of times when I feel awful because I'll be in the middle of a turning and on a roll and I have to tell him that it's not a good time for him to turn.....even though I have two lathes.....I just don't feel comfortable letting him turn unsupervised at one of them without me right there watching him. If you instill safety and good, simple instruction and think your son is up to the responsibility of the safety that goes along with turning, I wouldn't hesitate. Go for it! Your son will thank you!

>Bud,

Our club has a member whose son turns bottlestoppers. I think this may be a great possibility. They are small, quick, and low cost. The form is wide-open for experimentation. You need few tools to begin. Plus, they are marketable.

I a sure he could get hooked if he knew he could make some extra money on the side with them.

BTW, the AAW is placing emphasis on teaching turning to youth. Included is a portion of an email that came from them recently regarding the 2005 Symposium in Overland Park, KS.

Best wishes,

John

_________

The AAW Board of Directors has heard the membership loud and clear that we almost never have young people at AAW functions and especially our symposiums. We ask Who will be our future turners and where will they come from? For the 2005 Symposium July 22-24 in Overland Park (Kansas City), any young person ages 10 through 17 years old may attend and receive full registration including the banquet ($245 value), free, if they are accompanied by a registered adult. We recommend that regional or mini symposiums consider doing the same.

As a bonus incentive to help you remember to register and bring your niece, nephew, grandchild, or the kid down the block, there will be a drawing held where the luckiest 20 youngsters will receive complete turning outfits. WMH Tool Group has generously donated 20 Jet Midi-Lathes on stands. Teknatool International has donated 20 Nova Precision Midi Chucks to fit the Jet lathes and Crown Tools has donated 20 sets of seven essential turning tools.

Prior to the Saturday night drawing, all of the donated equipment will be used in a hands on rotation room where Bonnie Klein has agreed to conduct hands on workshops for the youth with any open slots going to the adults. Were searching for an AAW chapter or volunteers to furnish 10 assistants to help Bonnie teach the workshops. During the rotations when Bonnie has other duties, the chapter will conduct hands on project sessions with the equipment.

The winners of the equipment will be responsible for shipping the lathe home. UPS will be on site to help.

Think of the tremendous impact on the creative young minds when they see the instant gallery, watch world class demonstrators, and visit the trade show. This is your opportunity to change a life and help create a new woodturner.

>I think the above are all very valid suggestions. I think the key is to get the boy interested. Pushing does not seem to work well with teenagers. Asking for "help" sometimes works much better.

>If I am not mistaken it was mailed to all presidents of local AAW chapters. It was also on the AAW website, search under the forum area as I know it was discussed there. I know that they offered a free event pass to any two children under 12 with a paid member. There is going to be a juniors area with Bonnie Klien and others offering some instruction geared towards juniors and the AAW was soliciting helpers for the area. I believe instruction was to be on mini's.

I would like to get people (the web community) fired up to help at the class that Ms. Klein is giving.

>My soon to be twelve grandson has spent the last three Thanksgiving weekends in my woodshop making Christmas gifts. He turned 27 items last year. These things if purchased would have been worth well over five hundred dollars. The smiles on his grannies' and parents' faces are only surpassed by his smile. A job well done becomes a family heirloom. As he matures and learns, he gets exposed to meaner, more dangerous machines. He turned a purple heart freedom pen for our pastor who was wounded in Nam, but never got his PH medal. Pastor Ron carries this pen every day, not bad for a kid who was barely eleven when he turned it.

>I make lots of tops ... Here's one of my favorites, an acorn top, in this case made from Beech. I have a series of photos showing how I make these, if you are interested. I also make throw tops (a.k.a. peg tops -- the ones you wrap a string around), and whip tops, which a 12 year-old would like a lot -- no photos of these, though. You can get some cool top info at the Toycrafter -- see link, below.
