Allergic reaction??? (long)

Bill Lordan, Auburn NH

>Last Monday night, I developed a case of the shivers that lasted - off and on - pretty much all night. As morning approached I decided to take one of the dogs out to do it's duty. While outside I felt terribly weak and thought I was going to pass out.I figured I had fooled around long enough and it was time to go to the emergency room.

Because of a long history of coronary artery disease dating back to 1988, the hospital immediatley began treating me as a coronary patient. I didn't feel the problem had anything to do with my heart and neither did the cardiologist but we both wanted to be safe than sorry.I took a thallium stress test which proved to be abnormal and then had a cardiac catheritization procedure. They found another blockage -now I have three - but they felt medication, exercise and diet will take care of the problem. They once again stated that they did not think my original problem stemmed from my coronary problems.

All week I have been trying to figure out what could have caused such a scary condition. I got into the emergency room around 6:00 am trembling all over - without having a fever, weak as a kitten and pretty much hyperventilating. By 10:00 am all the symptoms were gone.

This morning I went back into the shop to turn some bottle stoppers from stock I had milled Monday evening. I had cut up Paduak, Bubinga and Thulya burl without a dusk mask. Could this possibly have caused my problem? I realize that I'm clutching at straws but the doctors were no help.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

>A wild one: did you use any paint stripper? The Methylene (sp?) chloride in thinners somehow becomes carbon monoxide in a person's blood stream and therefore these substances should only be used where there's plenty of ventilation.

>i'm no expert, however your symptoms are more in line with thyroid/endrocrine/heart than with allegic reaction to wood.

>I'm no doctor or medical expert of any sort, but I am familiar with some wood allergies, from personal experience. I think most wood allergies manifest themselves in the form of local rashes and things like that rather than the types of symptoms you describe.

A couple of weeks ago, for instance, I experienced a bit of rash on the insides of my elbows (strange place, huh?) after turning some Gaboon Ebony. It was a warm day and I was a bit sweaty as I worked. I figure sawdust got on my arms. As I worked with my arms bent, it was skin against skin with a layer of ebony sawdust in between. The sweat just speeded things up a bit. Daily applications of a hydrocortisone creme for 3 or 4 days and the rash is gone. Maybe I will wear long sleeves next time.

I agree with you that most allergies appear as rashes or skin problems. I was just clutching at straws hoping to figure out what happened. I realize that I will never know and just hope it turns out to be a once in a lifetime fluke.

Thank You and everyone else who responded.

>You describe the sewage flu. When you work in a sewage treatment plant this very same thing is bound to happen sooner or later. It's almost dumbfounding how paralized you can feel but after a day it goes away. I had heard a few explantions over the years but none seemed very promising.
