This hollow vessel thing...

>...is way WAY cool.

After receiving suggestions (thanks guys) on making hollowing tools, I was at the Blue Borg this morning when they opened.

Got two 1/2x36" and two 3/4x36" cold rolled rods, a hot glue gun, some glue sticks, and a 1/4" cobalt drill bit.

On the way home I stopped at the hardware store and got a 1/4"x20 tpi tap and some set allen screws.

Woke up neighbor on way home and got a 12" piece of 1/4" HSS.

To the shop.

Drilled and cross drilled the rods. Tapped some threads in them. Cut 2" pieces of HSS, ground them round to fit holes in rod, and sharpened a cutting edge I thought I could work with.

Mounted a dry spalted maple bowl that I had roughed out 6 mos ago and figgered I'd try to undercut the lip as I finish turned...

Then I mounted a piece of wet black walnut and tried a vase...then another piece of walnut for a semi-closed form...

HOLY COW, this is FUN!!! I shoulda done this a LOOOOONNNGGG time ago!

Thanks for all the help guys...more stuff to add to my repitoire.

Just as a reference, what would you say your tools cost you in cash? Time?

And like Mike, I'd like to see a picture of the finished product and the configuration of the cutting bits.

Well, let's see...

BubbaBob

>...cost was prohibitive...NOT!

Two 1/2" by 36" steel rods @ 6.00 ea...12.00

Two 3/4" by 36" steel rods @ 8.00 ea...16.00

Four set screws @ .29 ea....1.16

1/4 by 20 tpi tap...3.89

Two carbon drill bits @ 5.29 ea...10.58

Bits were free, but I have some ordered from ENCO, two .39 ENCO bits makes cutter tips for all four tools, so, for the cutters .78

$44.41 expense for all four tools, and that includes $14.47 for tap and drill bits used to make tools, so $39.93 for a straight and a swans neck curve 1/2" hollowing tool and a straight and a swans neck curve 3/4" hollowing tool...$9.08 each.

It took me an hour and a half to make all four tools...three hours total if you count going to the borg and hardware store.

Tools are still unhandled, but handles will be turned out of maple scrap and will take an hour at the most, including installation.

Broke the budget, so no pics anytime soon as I don't have money left for digital camera...LOL

People actually sell these things fer a hundred bucks and up? Damn...I'm in the wrong bidness...

Been saying the same all year!

>Welcome to the cheap side. BTW- Cold rolled is strong enough to drill twice- once straight on, and once @45 degrees to the tip. If you angle the drill right, it will pass through the same set screw location, and you'll be able to lock the bit in at 45 and straight on one tool.

here is one of mine...

>total cost (assuming you own a drill, bits, and a tap set) <$5.

The tip is also drilled to mount the bit straight on. It is 5/8" cold rolled, cut to ~18" and epoxied into a hardwood handle.

Costs very similar to Bubba Bob's.

>Watch out Buba. The downslope is treacherous. I have had so much fun making cutting tools for special purpose turnings that now I have to keep the shop locked because I am embarassed by the hundred or so home made tools hanging on the walls and hidden in the drawers. It cuts in on my tuirning time too. Bill
