Finishing the botton of a large bowl

David Galloway

>Okay, here's the deal. I was turning a LARGE bowl, at least my largest yet, 26 inches diameter. I turned it outboard using a heavy-duty Oneway faceplate. Turned a roughed out blank and set it aside for finishing for my sister in law for Christmas. Look great BUT, what do I do with this large spigot that is left on the bottom from the face place. Someone in my chapter suggested leaving it and putting small dowels in the screw holes. I am wondering about other solutions. I have learned something clearly, but don't want to lose this bowl. Help!

>Turn a large wooden disc that fits the rim.

Attach with plastic wrap (for a pallet). Or Duck Tape. Works. And there's no such things as too much.

>You just made me realize something. I'm going to have the same issue when I start turning outboard on my 3520. Right now I have the convenient tailstock chuck adapter to perfectly (almost) center the work on the vac chuck.

I think you may have just saved me some money and I might have to live within the confines of a 20" swing.

Thanks!

Make a "sandwich" chuck...

BubbaBob

>...I believe it was something Bill Grumbine posted in the last month or two.

Cut two plywood discs, one with a hole big enough for the foot, the other with a faceplate attached in the center.

Equi-distant around the discs, drill three holes in each that line up with the holes in the other disc. Sandwich the turning between the discs, and use carriage bolts or threaded rod and nuts to tighten and hold the bowl.

I made one last month, and it sure makes finishing the bottoms of my bowls easier, without hassle and expense of vacume chuck.

>I use a variation of Steve's approach. I hold the bowl firmly onto the disk by driving 3 or 4 screws and large fender washers next to the edge of the bowl so that the washers overlap the edge of the bowl. Glue a piece of thin cardboard or other softening material to the washers so that they do not mark the work piece. (Fender washers are washers with a very small hole compared to their max diameter and are available at any building supply store.)

Dave, make a frame and...

>route off the base. If there are any screw holes left fill them and then paint the bottom with Gesso (from an art store). I do all my big bowls this way.

>Dave after having gone through all the work making your bowl I think you should finish the bottom properly, I have made some large bowls, rough turned two 31" crotchwood bowls, finished turned one to 28", it got confiscated (my wife will never let it go) (:)) . I always finish the bottoms.

l use 3/4" mdf platters screw 1" barnboard on that for stiffness and then turn a groove in it for the bowl to fit in, then clamp the bowl down with some short wedging pieces of wood and carefully finish the bottem.

Have fun and take care

Another interesting bottom treatment...

BubbaBob

>...I have seen but not used...yet...is carved bottoms. Rim of bottom is turned when roughing out, then, upon finish turning the rest, the rim is decoratively carved.

Still trying to decide if I like the look...

>I like the compression chuck idea. What do you do if the height of the bowl is very large, I mean, Terry Daniel big?

Thanks for everyone's helpfulness. YOu guys are great.
