Oneway Jaws

>Could someone explain the difference or benefits between the Oneway Spigot jaw over the Oneway Step jaw? I understand that the Spigot protrudes farther from the chuck than the step, but I'm wondering if the Steps would be better for such things as the pocket watches I'm going to attempt?

Thanks for your help.

Ooops....

>I see now that the step jaws aren't available for the Stronghold......perhaps THAT's the difference!...with that in mind....I guess I only have the one choice....unless there are other jaw sets that would fit the Stronghold by another manufacturer?

>I see you already found out that about the Stronghold not accepting the step jaws.

Personally, I like the step jaws for holding small things over the Spigot (#1 jaws) jaws. The Spigot jaws do go down to hold a piece that's 1/4" and the step jaws "only" go down to 3/8". That 1/8" difference hasn't been a problem for me. Not that it might make a difference to someone else though.

I didn't like the Spigot jaws, mainly, because they're more in-the-way than the step jaws. The step jaws have plenty of holding surface for holding small things but they don't protrude out so much. They also don't have that annoying little bump near the end of the jaws like the Spigot jaws do. I always end up hitting a knuckle with that blasted bump!

When working small things, you often have to get in there really tight to work. The step jaws just aren't as in the way while still giving plenty of grip.

Not to mention that the step jaws are just more versatile, if need be, by working in expansion at various diameters with those steps on the outside.

If possible (which it isn't for your situation with the stronghold), I'd opt for the step jaws.

The stronghold has the Collet chuck which allows for a variety of compression and expansion chucking. The smallest expansion is 1" (actually slightly less than 1") on up to 3". The compression is at 1/2" 3/4", 1", 1 1/4". 1 1/2".

The collets which are in contact with the work piece are made of aluminum so you can work close to the chuck.

Good luck

>Another option is the flat jaws that Oneway offes. These are flat steel plates that you attach some sacraficial material, such as MDF, and turn the jaw to fit your work. In a machine shop, these are made from aluminum and called soft jaws. They work good for the one off project, where the normal jaws will not really do what you want.
