Pocket Watch Supplies

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hi Everybody,

I've got some interest in making a few pocket watches for gifts and am wondering who is the best supplier for the inserts. I don't want to break the bank but I don't want the cheepo plastic framed ones either. Also, am I correct in that you buy the watch insert and then a ring that sits in the turned piece that the watch insert screws into? Obviously I've never made one. I looked at Rockler this morning but there's looked pretty cheep. They were in packaging I couldn't open but they looked like plastic? I looked at the Klockit website but there's not much to choose from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,

Jennifer

>Hi Jennifer

It has been my experience that just about all the watch inserts come from the same place, Precision Movements. They moved from Emmaus (just down the road from me) to somewhere in the midwest. I used to walk in to buy my clocks, and in talking with the guy at the counter, and overhearing loud people on the phone in the back room, I discovered that these guys were the importers (and in some cases manufacturers) and they sold to everyone else. Clocks from Penn State and clocks from Woodcraft come from the same place, but do not necessarily carry the same price tag. I don't know if this helps you any, but it might. My experience has been that as long as they are not banged around too much, they work fairly well.

>If you look on Russ Fairfield's web site he has a tutorial on making pocket watches. Everything and more than you need to know about making them. I can't remember if he listed the sources he used or not.

Good luck.

>I've made a ton of desk clocks using the little 1 7/16" clock inserts. The best/cheapest source I've found is National Artcraft...link below. BTW, go for the "Extra Heavy Duty Model". They're made by Seiko and are a real bargain. If you need more than 25, give them a call and ask for a better price...my last order was for 100 at $3.45 each.

>Jen Lee Valley has small (1 7/16") gold plated bezel clock inserts, no they are not cheap, about $12. Canadian.

They also have gold plated watch chain. 5 bucks for them.

Have fun and take care
