weekend work, part 1

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Silver maple bowl/vase. About 10" high, walls 1/8" all the way down, small foot. Hand sanded, lathe off, to 12000 and Watco'd. Not buffed yet. There is a subtle, sinewy curve to the outside profile that is just barely really visible in this picture.

This silver maple is some lovely stuff. Lot of tear out but it sands clean pretty easily if first stiffened up with sanding sealer.

>Hey Mike,

I really like this piece. It is the first I've seen in a while that I really agree with the foot. I guess I'm just parcial to "no foot." Anyway, really nice.

I do have a question for you, or anyone else that might have the answer. You say that this wood is silver maple. Is silver maple the same thing that I know as "water maple?" The tree I am talking about is the one the power companies come by once in a while and cut major hunks out of to keep the power lines clear. Folks seem to have them "trimmed" in the fall to a degree that makes you wonder if they will ever grow back, but they always do. Just wondering.

Thanks again for sharing with the rest of us.
