first "bowl"

>Actually it's a cup.

I picked up a spalted white oak log from a firewood dealer.

As I was turning it I got to wonderning.

When you turn a bowl do you turn the inside or outside first?

I have a Jet mini so size is limited.

No Hi tech chucks, just the OEM face plate and a small expansion chuck like you would use for watches.

>I always turn the outside first, giving it it's shape, and then turn it around and hollow. Without a chuck you will have to glue a block onto the base so you can screw the faceplate to it without leaving screw holes in your work. Put the block on before taking the piece off the lathe to turn it around if doing it this way. Other options are using double sided tape to hold it on the faceplate or turn it between centers. A chuck is a convenience, not a necessity.

TDaniel - can you

>elaborate on how to turn a bowl without any special chucks? I've had a Jet Mini for over a year and haven't use it yet for anything.

I'd like to try making a small bowl for fun some day.

Thanks.

>I'm not Terry, but I would be happy to share my faceplate technique. I just recently purchased a chuck, but learned to turn using a faceplate and waste block that Terry referred to.

What I do is to cut a circle of wood thick enough for screws to go into and not penetrate the blank. I also have a Jet mini and use 6/4 poplar for this. Others use other woods. Pine is not a good choice.

After the waste block is attached to the faceplate, I mount the blank between centers and turn the tailstock side flat or just slightly concave. Remove the small stub that is left with a sharp chisel.

I use medium viscosity CA glue to glue the wasteblock/faceplate to the blank by applying the glue to the wasteblock and some accelerator to the blank, then press them together.

When you attach the mounted blank on your headstock spindle, the end attached to the wasteblock is the bottom of whatever you are turning. Shape the outside, then hollow the inside.

Hope this helps a bit.

>Bonnie Klein has an excellent video (#2 I think) that shows how to make a small bowl only using a face plate. I've got the lathe and now a bowl gouge, now all I need is TIME!
