>This is a 10"w x 6"h camphor hollow vessel with Ipe collar. Finished with shellac/wax to a glossy-gloss, which looks good on this wood.

(and whoopee, i've found a method for reducing hot spots from photo with reflector boards-but you can see them in the reflection ... agh, photography!)

Nice piece.

>thanks, ellis ... it's been difficult working with this wood because of it instability...much of what i harvested has self-destructed.

>ipe turns much better than it cuts. you can get a very nice surface with its tight grain. i used it for pulls, knobs, collars, accent wood.

it does dull the gouge faster than some woods but not anything outstanding -- i've been turning a lot of black acacia that is much worse on dulling tools.

however, it is one wood i have to wear my air-helmet with, or i start tasting it and get a cough. the dust is green until it finds moisture, then it stains red.

if you want, i'll help you out by taking that log off your hands! :>)

>the wood is interesting, although very unstable -- the heartwood is very reactive. this piece moved so much out of round it almost didn't make it. to accentuate the heartwood, i used a garnet shellac as a finish.

>Great form, and I sure like the wood. I have turned a lot of camphor, but the wood was never as pretty as this.
