CA fumes

keith zimmerman, Normal, IL

>I was applying a very liberal amount of thin CA to a blank last night and got hit face-first with a massive dose of the fumes. As I backed away and headed outside for some fresh air, I got to wondering if that was a good thing. I said, "self, that can't be good for you. If you are going to be doing this with any kind of regularity, you should invest in some kind of mask or resperator."

Now, question is, what kind of mask/respirator would be best for use for CA glue fumes?

Any comments or opininions are welcome. I think I want to live long enough to see 54, so I will making a purchase soon.

Thanks in advance.

>Keith,

You're right, those fumes aren't good for you! Some folks (like myself) are also very allergic to them. If you use a respirator, you need something to stop fumes, not particles. I use a dust collector, with the nozzle near where I'm applying the CA, and the collector itself is across the shop from me. Basically, that removes the fumes from my area. As long as I don't do a lot of CA gluing, this works well. However, if I use it enough to saturate my shop air, I have to open the door and leave until the fumes dissipate. Since I started using this method, I've had no more problems with the fumes. By the way, I'm so sensitive to them that one whiff can cause problems for me, so I think this method works quite well for me. Good luck!

>Check some of the suppliers of the different brands of CA glue. There are low odor and odorless available.

I have a bottle of medium viscosity odorless at home. I don't recall the name brand but I think it's Star.

Good Luck

>Why wouldn't the fumes still be there even though it is odorless. I think natural gas is ordorless but has an odor for safety.

Organic vapor respirator *LINK*

>A "dust" mask won't stop organic vapor.

SWMBO uses a 3M 6000 full face mask. She has both N95 dust cartridges and (F)OV vapor cartridges to use on it depending on what she's doing. It's conformable enough to wear most of a day.

>Hi Keith,

I got a nice little respirator from the paint store when I was doing the epoxy paint on the floor of my shop. I don't even catch a whiff of the CA when I wear it! But be aware that the fumes will still get to your eyes! So Greg's idea of removing the fumes from the area is also a good idea!

Scott.

>I use a fan to keep most of the fumes blown away from me. I keep it to one side and it does a good job but I still get it once and a while.

Good turning and above all be safe

>Isn't the "C" in CA. . cyanide, the same stuff they use in the "green Room" in California. Be careful with it.

>The fumes do NOT contain cyanide. This has been addresseed several times on this board. They are however as has been stated, very irritating. good ventilation is the key.

>Works better than bandaids. It was originally used for glueing tissue together. I use it anytime I get a cut and have glued a section of tissue back in place, cut the healing time to a few days. My doctor says it is great for that.

Both the C and the A are leathal by themselves, and I used to wash my hands everytime I used it - did everything except wear gloves. But that was back in mid '70's when it was comming into use for glueing wood. Today, I treat it like any other glue..

>Didn't say the fumes did . Just commented on the coponent of the "C". No matter what the final attribute the stuff is not one I care to take lightly cause I have been burned and fumed like amny others.
