Watched David Marks turn a bowl

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Nice to see David demonstrating other types of woodworking. Watched him turn a claro walnut bowl last night and while it sure turned out nice he used some very elementary techniques that could easily be made simpler. I was supposing he did this for an intended audience that wasn't folks that turn every day. I had a lot of "yeah, I used to do it that way" moments. It was also nice to see him turning on an old lathe.

But I also think that if I was not yet a turner this would have helped me quite a bit. Was nice to see a show like that. I also enjoy Dave Hout's show on DIY in the same fashion, but mostly it is just nice to watch someone turn wood on TV.

An an unabashed plug for my TIVO unit - I have a wishlist setup for anything having to do with "woodturning". It is always a nice surprise to check the recently recorded list and see something turning related.

I don't get DIY darn it. They just filmed some episodes with several of my friends. Brenda Stein was the woodturner they picked. She's wonderful and very pleasant to look at as well. I'll have to find someone to record those for me.

What is TIVO. Isn't that one of the Jackson 5.

>What is TIVO? Greatest gadget ever. Digital video recorder, basically a PC that records shows for you on a hard drive. It also records whatever channel is currently tuned, so that you can pause live TV, rewind it, or decide to record a show that you just finished watching. I set it up to record my favorite shows, some reruns, some first runs only, and it goes and does it. Never really watch live TV anymore, and absolutely NEVER watch a commercial. It has a programmable 30 second skip button - usually it takes 6-8 presses to go through a set of commercials. (record so far is 12).

I also have it watching out for specific types of programs - anything with the word "woodturning" or "triathlon", or any movie with Audrey Hepburn.

My unit records up to 80 hours of shows. There is a new unit out that will transfer your taped shows to DVD discs. I'm hoping that Mrs. Schwingding got this for my birthday gift for next week.

TIVO totally changes the way you watch TV - puts the control back in your hands. It is called TIVO for DirecTV, and DVR for Comcast and other cable providers.

>John,

Do you have any more information about this episode? Brenda was in a Ray Key class with me at Arrowmont a few years ago, and it would be great to see her on TV.

>Oh man, I hate it when my Yankee roots show through. I was born in Indiana but lived in the South the rest of my life. Born in the same hospital as John Mellencamp. I think were related now. My cousin married his cousin or something like that.

>I don't watch enough TV the hardly have one. I spend to much time in the shop. Had rather be there than sitting in front of a TV.

Now, I will confess I did watch Va Tech take out George Tech last night.

>I have DISH Network and have a PVR (personal video recorder). It's sort of like TIVO, but without some of the features, like the search thing. My recorder will only store up to 36 hours of recording. But it works really well. I imagine TIVO is even better.
