>"Parting Tool" = Thin Skew in my universe.

- Reciprocating saw blade (it's HSS) with the teeth ground off. Thin parting tool.

- Another parting tool. Reground it completely to a different shape

- Unused Scraper. Flip it on it's side and grind off the scraper bevel to what I want a parting tool to look like.

- 2 ton truck leaf spring. Use the straight portion unless you want to make a bowl coring tool.

- Some steel plate I got from leftovers at Home Depot.

About any steel will work as long as you know how strong, brittle, hard it is and how much sharpening you want to do with it.

>two thoughts

1. A heavy table knife, don't take the good ones , almost everyone has a mismatched one in their silverware drawer.

2. I used a piece of bandsaw blade (from a sawmill) that worked nicely. Now would the person that borrowed that one please return it to me ?

>I make 3 kinds, the power hacksaw blade thins, 3/8" square x 8" long tool steel bit for the bedan type and cut down planer blades for 1/8" thick. An air operated abrasive cut off tool from HF makes cutting hardened tool steel fairly easy. Prehardened steel is available from MSC.

>Not set up to post a pic but it looks like a large version of a Chris Stott parting tool. It`s sharpened the same.

The handle(if you can call it that)is just a piece of stiff reinforced marine water hose compressed in a vice and the blade slipped inside. The handle becomes an adjustable depth stop as long as a vice is nearby(G).
