Aside from carving them, I can't for the life of me figure out how anyone would actually turn free, interlocking captive rings.

You need an electronic reciprocating gouge to do captive interlocking rings correctly! Ha ha, I put that line up on Badger Pond when I posted my first picture of interlocking rings, and I had people going nuts because they did not read the next sentence. As Mike and Mark have already described, break one ring and glue it back around the other. Because the break follows grain lines, it is usually invisible, or nearly so. I am planning on doing a few goblets in the next week or two in this style for a show I have coming up, but here is a picture of one I did last summer for my wife's boss and his wife.

I have done the rings with a skew in the past, but now I use a combination of a beading tool and a hook tool that I call my "git around behind" tool. That makes the rings rounder faster and easier.

If you have any more questions, I would be glad to try and answer them for you. Good luck with your own rings. As an aside, it was watching a friend of mine turn a captive ring on a cheap Chinese lathe way back in 1985 that first started the lust for turning in my heart.

Over here in the UK we still do them the old fashioned way by breaking one in half, interlocking it with the other and then gluing it back together.

Will you still speak to us when you're a billionaire?

You have at best confirmed my suspicions..but there have been a few of us "thick" Aussies in Western Australia (WA - which also stands for "wait awhile") trying to figure out how it could be done..

I checked with my CC company, and they said no problem with foreign money and all that. All you need is plastic! I will let you know when it is ready, which I hope is soon. I got my proof copy last Thursday, and all the changes have been made. It should be very soon now...
