>Where are some turning and wood source places to visit while in Hawaii?

I have to go to Hawaii in the middle of January to attend a wedding and would like to see if I can find some turning related places to visit while there.

We will be staying on Kauai for the wedding but would like to see more of the state while there.

I would also like to get some Koa if it makes sense to get it there and haul it back or maybe it is just as good to get it here on the mainland. I'd like to turn some pens with the Koa and maybe some small bowls and bandsaw boxes.

Thanks for any help/advice you can give.

>I just got back from Hawaii. I found a woodcraft store in Honalulu that had several great pieces of Koa. I also picked up some Milo. I wasn't all that impressed with the price though. I think I can get it cheaper here in Salt Lake City. The hotel I stayed in had a cabinet full of turned bowls in various woods all labled and very nice. I can't recall the name of the artist though.

I didn't get to Kawai so maybe there is more there. Have a great time.

>Thanks Bert,

I was concerned that the pricing might be about the same as here.

I was even thinking that I might take some turning lessons if some of the good guys there have time for an aspiring turner.

If you go to Maui... *LINK*

Lloyd Johnson

>East of the Kahalui airport on Maui, on the road to Hana is a fellow that sells lumber and turning blocks from his home. He has an extensive inventory of hawaiian exotics. I bought some very beautiful koa from him last year - some which I brought back on the plane and some that he shipped via UPS. The wood is expensive, but far less than if you were to buy it from a retail location. I've attached a link to his website, but the site mostly is a way to reach him.

It's worth your while to go there, but make sure you get good directions as it is difficult to find.

>You might try and find a guy named Chris Allen. He posts photos over on the WOW site of very beautiful bowls of native Hawiian woods. I believe he is on the big island. I think he has a friend who runs a sawmill as well. If you are a WOW member you can look up his address and phone number.

Have a great trip, Don

>I am a WOW member and I will check.

I might even see if I can take some lessons while there from one of the island turners.
