Busy turning Burls...

KurtK in Indy

>I've been busy turning the burls I received on a prior found wood gloat. Here is a good sized bowl I turned this week and saved tonight after having the rim crack pretty good in 3 places. I used CA to the rescue and was very happy with how it came out. I finished it with lacquer and sanded it down a little to tone down the high gloss.

Comments and critiques always welcome.

Here's another..smaller

>This was the first bowl I did a couple weeks ago. It is a bit smaller and I haven't gotten around to putting a finish on yet...

It's about 5" diameter x 5" tall and about 2.5" at base.

And finally a burl box....

>This is the second bow I made after an experiment with finishes on the first. I think that one ...someone said it looked like Bart Simpson...This one does too....I'm not crazy about it because it is pretty plain and kida stubby.

It looks nice though and eventaull I will put some type of finish on it.

Thanks for looking, Kurt

>Kurt, I like the looks of the burl-covered spikes on the lid. When a bowl is turned from burl, 90 % of the burl is lost digging out the inside of the bowl. Good job, now I want to hunt up some of my salted away burl and turn a lidded box of my own. Thanks for the pic.............Roly, been Rollin' all my life.

>Tell me Kurt, how do you hollow the inside of the lid without damaging the burl? I love the look of that burl box and want to try one for myself.

Thanks

Hi Mike

>I'm not certain the type although I don't think it is big leaf maple. They came from a log sawing company that usually get their logs fairly locally. I would imagine they are just some type of hard maple.

Thanks for the comment

It's easy as long as.....

KurtK in Indy

>you have a vacuum chuck system. I rounded the blank and then put a lip (if you will) on the lid portion that would be below the spikes and have a solid rim. I then made a vacuum chuck that was deep enough to allow the spike to sit inside the chuck and not touch the seat of it. Turned the inside of the lid careful to mark where the finished diameter of the box would be. When I finished the inside, I popped the lid back on the overall box and turned the lip away to the same diameter of the the box. I used my pointed center on the tailstock and put a piece of neoprene on it to protect the spike. Just dumb luck the the point fell right in the hollow of a couple spikes. I didn't tighten the tailstock very much...just enough to keep it snug and allow for the lid not to slip as I cut.

The execution was pretty simple...it was figuring out that I neede a pretty deep chuck (several attempts that yielded not deep enough).

Without a vacuum chuck system...well...it is monday and my brain doesn't want to work too hard on that yet.

Good luck,

Kurt
