On my 1642 with nothing on the head not even a spindle taper. I get some bad vibration at 500 to 650 RPMs and 775 to 875, run smooth at all other speeds on that belt setting.

On the high speed I get the same Vibration at 1400 to 1500 and 1700 to 1800. All others are smooth.

What I have tried

1.move head to different spots on the lathe.

2.Tightend and loosened belt.

3.Moved enter lathe to new spot and re-leveled

4.Added more weight.

5.Checked for run-out less than .001 until vibration starts then it�s too wild to read.

6.Checked for shaft movement by lifting and pulling on it, none that I could fell.

I have not called support yet thought I would try here first to see if any one else has had this problem and how you fixed it. Or is it normal to have Vibration at some speeds and just avoid them. Thanks you any replies. John

>Run the motor without the motor pulley attached to the belt. This will check motor and its pulley. If vibration exists remove the pulley and re check the motor only. You could have a bent motor shaft.

Are all pulleys tight on the shafts.

Check the belt for problems.

Did you check the lathe shaft movement without tension on the belt?

>Check the pullies by removing the belt off the pullies then with the plug pulled from the wall reach in there and see if there loose on the shaft. Another thing you might check while your are there is the alignment of the pullies. Mine were a good quarter inch off om my JET 1642.

If you have a stethoscope, or you could use a long screw driver, place the tip against the motor case where the bearings are. Run the motor and change the speed. You will be able to hear a bad bearing 'growl'. Jet sent me a new motor, smooth a silk. If you would like more info, you can reach me here. jsseigal@juno.com

If you place a call into Jet, they will pretty much take care of you. Their customer service is OUTSTANDING. Here is a link to a page on their web site that contains all the contact information.

Another option, and much more direct I might add, it to bring this defect to the attention of the store where you bought it. Woodcraft replaced the headstock on my old Jet JWL-1236 lathe with no questions asked. If they are a reputable firm, they'll take care of you.
