There must be a rash of these problems going around. This is the third I've heard in the last month! I had a similar problem with my Jet JWL-1236 and it turned out to be accumulated dried up Cosmoline interfering with the internals.

Basically, you need to clean the cosmoline off of the Reeves Drive (mechanical variable speed mechanism). I use mineral spirits and a rag to do this. Wipe off the pulleys, try to move them a bit, wipe some more, etc, etc. You get the idea.

After you're done, be sure to lube with something other than Oil, WD-40, or grease. All of these things will ATTRACT and hold sawdust. I use a dry film silicone lubricant from Dow. I believe it's #557. McMaster Carr carries it. I lube all the internal mechanisms of all my woodworking tools with this stuff. Since it's essentially a dry powder, it does not hold sawdust. And it seems to last a lot longer than oil.

>I didn't feel like taking the reeves drive apart. I have a spray can of brake parts cleaner that did the job. Then I sprayed with some silicone.

I havent opened mine up yet and it does stick just a bit before it is warmed up. Jet 1442 owner.

What I mean is if you move it through the range of speeds each time you use it, it seems to "break in" and not hang as much. Also, try to take it back down to "slow" before shutting down for the night. It will keep less tension on the belt.

>Personally, I take the belt cover off, turn on the lathe, and spray the brake cleaner along the shaft while moving the speed control back and forth. Wear eye protection! After its cleaned up, I turn off the lathe and spray the silicone lube on the shaft, turn it on, move the speed control, stop the lathe, spray the lube, etc. I have to do this maintenance every 2 months or so to keep the speed control working smoothly.
