I would assume cross grain but I wonder if anyone is doing them end grain and if there are any photos around that show this type of work?

I don't think it is nit picking to mention again that many mediocre or even poor turnings are made when we try to get the maximum sized piece out of a blank. Even with expensive timber, don't let size rule your orientation decisions.
