Besides the safety concerns in doing something with a machine that it wasn't intended for (bearing loads, weight, etc.), here's a reason that turning outboard isn't going to work too well...

There's a wave washer between the handwheel and the bearing holding the spindle. Tighten the handwheel too tight (same effect when putting chisel to wood while turning outboard) and you'll bind things up on that bearing and things won't spin at all.

I appreciate your comments on reaching outside what the tool was designed for; maybe the spindle and bearings aren't sufficient to handle 16-17", which is what I'm looking for.
