>I need some advice:

I had almost finished a 12 inch Cherry bowl, putting about 15 coats of Waterlox on it, 4 oooo steel wool between each application. I then pulled out the Beall Buffing equipment and did the tripoli, white diamond and then waxed it. While waxing I started to see the high gloss shine going away. The surface is covered with a grainy/gummy surface. What did I do wrong? I assumed you could beall buff an oiled surface, was I wrong?

The lesson I learned about the system, is it doesn't really take a lot of wax to load the wheel. Running at 1750 rpm, I hold the wax on the wheel for 1-2 seconds. This is sufficient to wax a bowl. I made the mistake on my first bowl of really loading the wheel, and got a gummy surface with little bits of wax smeared on it. Like in hot rodding "if one 's good two 's better", if two seconds were good in the instructions - 10 has to be a lot better - riiight. After the wax wore off the wheel, it has worked great ever since.

>We have a couple of winners. I'd put money on it that there is too much wax, especially if the problem didn't surface with the tripoli or white diamond. Like they said, just "scare" the wheel by showing it the wax block, thats about enough.

>You can clean the wax buffing wheel by lightly and for a few seconds, holding a hack saw blade, teeth to the wheel.Of course while its spinning. Sounds crazy but works well for me. Good luck, Sean

>An old jewelers trick, take a file and hold the main part of the file in your hands. Use the point of the file IE the handle to clean the buff while the machine is turned on. Jewelers buffs always get caked with Tripoli.

>Gil has it right. You can clean the wheel using the file handle, or even a straight screwdriver. This is a trick I learned years ago from a buddies Dad who was a Auto Body Man. He always used a screwdriver to clean the bonnet of rubbing compound when buffing a paint job. He called it "Spurring" the wheel. That old, dried crusty compound would just fly right off the buffing bonnet and it was soft and fluffy and ready to go again. I have tried the same thing with my Tripoli Wheel for my Beall, and it works like a charm!

>Metal may discolor the wheel. If you put it in the washing machine you can start from scratch and it will work very well.

>Jack, did you get the finish too hot while buffing? The Waterlox will gum up if overheated, expecially if it hasn't had a couple of week's of cure time.
