A tip for glue blocks on steroids

>When turning large bowls with a glue block tenon clamped in chuck jaws, I almost always got wobble when opening up the inside. So as an experiment, I bought nuts to fit the spindle, 1 1/4 X 8, from a local supplier (Tacoma Screw). I punched 2" holes in 8/4 hard maple with a forstner bit, and epoxied the nuts it place. I use 3", 4", 5" and 6" glue blocks with the nuts and No more wobble on big bowls.

>Great idea. I've seen this done on a very small scale for boxes, but it never crossed my mind to try it on this scale.

Thanks

>I do something along the same lines but instaed of using a nut I tap a wood block to match the threads on the spindale. I have a Grizzly 1495 with 1"x12 threads on the spindal. I drill a 7/8" hole into the face grain, tap it as straight as I can and then use a bit of beeswax to lube the wood threads. Spin it on the spindal and true up both ends. Works great! With careful parting I can use the same glue block on several peices and use the remainder to make a chuck, faceplate, etc. I got the idea from Bill Jones book "Notes from the Turning Shop".
