>Because of my Dad, who is 87, and his girlfriend (she doesn't disclose her age!) - I find I have committed to turn a couple of nice walking canes! So my questions is, does anybody have some good suggestions on making canes? Methods and procedures, materials, parts? Any help would be welcome!

And now the gloat part - I knew that my Oneway 1224 would not be long enough to turn a cane, so I got the go-ahead from the boss to order the bed extension for the 1224, and the spindle steady! They shipped out from Oneway this last Tuesday, and I am anxiously awaiting their arrival! Greg Wilson told me I should have just ordered it with the lathe, and now I guess I have to admit he was right! This should be fun!

>I make my canes a bit differently than most, I suppose. I don't use separate handles. I don't steam bend much anymore. I simply use wood with a natural crook in it or carve a crook in a large enough piece of wood to serve as the handle.

So, how do I hold onto the wood in the lathe? This is where those independent jaw chucks of old comes in! I use a 4 or 3 jaw independent moving jaw chuck to grab hold of that crook/handle. Yes, it takes some fiddling to get it centered but you only do it once and it makes a unique cane.
