I've been reading these posts for a while now, I'm very impressed with your skill. Are you in Indianapolis? Have you considered offering a course to wannabes, like me?

I'm up on the northern edge of the state, South Bend area. All of the courses I've run across are in the east, too far to deal with. But if you had something like a weekend course, I'd be willing to pay for it.

On the modified slim lines ( with custom center bands) do the bottom tubes "butt" up to the top tubes,or do they "insert" like the Mont Blanc style? The fit looks great!

Thank you for the incredibly nice comments. I have never taught a class before....never thought about it really. I don't consider myself a very good teacher of turning....in fact...I would never want to subject anyone to my really bad habits! I'm very flattered, but honestly you would be better off to inquire with a "real" instructor. I'm not really turner....I just play one on TV :)

>I've seen some that are undercut on the top half and that allows the bottom half to seat inside. None of mine are done that way. I try to bevel the edge or make some sort of transition to make the centerpoint more natural. Hopefully it does. I highly recommend the Book "Turning Pens and Pencils" by Kip Christensen and Rex Burningham. It's a great book with lots of good ideas for making pens "outside" the box. Good for beginners and established pen turners alike. I love this book.

No center band

>Sometimes I turn the upper barrel a little thicker, and put a contrasting band on it. For example, walnut with an ebony or blackwood band, about 3/8" wide. I cut the brass tube for the upper barrel about 3/16" longer, or 2-1/4. I use the 10" inch 7 mm brass tubes for this. I burn a couple rings with a wire.

I found that a sharp drill bit can be used to indent the bottom of the upper barrel, and a little bevel on the top of the lower barrel will fit in very well. The drill bit is just a bit thicker than the bottom barrel. The indentation can be minimal, 1/32" is sufficient, but results in a much better finished pen because the obvious joint is concealed from view.

And.. I have a pic of such a pen, but it happens to be just a few bites too large to upload here !

As soon as I can find a replacement CF card reader for my camera, I will take a new pic and post it.

If you take the of cut of the wood you are turning and expose the end grain it normally finishes darker than the barrels.

The center pen is wenge with the centerband showing the end grain.

I liked it so much I used the same center band in the corn cob pen.

The antler pen to the right has an African Blackwood centerband.

Jennifer - these pens are great! What a nice variety of beautiful pens you have made! I hope they sell well for you! I have really enjoyed seeing all the pictures of stuff coming off your lathe! Amazing!
