For those outside North America, you might want to check out the prices that Carroll's Woodworking Supplies has (http://au.store.yahoo.com/cws-store/woodtool.html) and for anyone interested in a steel handle that matches the 12mm tang found on many of the P&N tools, they carry the Vermec which is an excellent lead shot filled handle for that size tang.

The long edge that is produced by this grind acts like a skew when rounding a cylinder, such as a pen. When laid on its side, it will cut straight into end grain, producing a square corner. It is also great for beads and coves. A very versitile tool. Which size did you purchase?

Properly designed spindle gouges are ground such that the bottom of the flute is exactly on the center of the bar stock. This allows the gouge to be used for drilling, like a spoon bit for an old auger drill.

Detail gouges are ground with the flute center above the axis of the bar which means that there is a lot of steel under the center of the cutting edge. When I've seen detail gouges used, they are typically ground with a smaller angle (~30 degrees) than a traditional spindle gouge (~40 degrees).

I got the 12mm one. I like the idea of grinding the long sides on the spindle gouges - that's how I have my other spindle gouges done. I think this is going to be a nice one! Although it's kind of funny, I just switched from a gouge to a skew for turning most of my pens about eight months ago. Figured I needed the skew practice! ;-)

I sure would like to visit (and attend) that school where you teach! But I don't get "back East" very often!
